6 days of walking
June 14 - June 22, 2022
Starting in Canterbury, England and ending in Rome, Italy, the Via Francigena is one of the longer pilgrimage routes in Europe and is steeped in history.
We, however, will only walk a segment that runs through Tuscany.
Enjoy Italian cuisine that is unique to this area and enjoy the sweeping landscapes that are unique to this region.
Gaze over vistas that haven't changed for centuries and experience the "dolce vita" that comes with spending time in Italy.
Walking through this region is quite pleasant with abundant rolling countryside, and welcoming villages.
This walk is for women who want the experience of walking a short pilgrimage route but
who also would like to be VERY comfortable at the end of the day.
We will stay in 3-4 star accommodations so you are rested and ready for another day of walking.
Meet in Florence, Italy, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture and art! Spend time strolling the streets, sampling gelato, and wandering across the medieval bridges spanning the Arno.
Enjoy a welcome dinner where we will meet each other and and kick off our time together. Our accommodation this evening is in the heart of the city, on a piazza just behind the duomo,
in a 16th century monastery that has been
turned into a classic Italian hotel.
Day #2 1.9 miles / 3.1 km
After a free morning in Florence, we will take a short train ride to
San Miniato, Italy where our journey will begin. A short, uphill
walk will take us from the train station to the center of the old town
where we will settle in to our lodging. Dinner will be together in our
Day #3 13 miles / 20.9 km
Let the walking commence! Tuscany is well known across the world but the beginning of our route will allow you to discover the Tuscany that is off the tourist track. A full day of walking will take us from San Miniato to Gambasi Terme. Green
and gold are the predominant colors of the day
with fields of early summer grass and classic Tuscan
architecture. Our lodging for the night has been a
pilgrim stop since the 10th century. This
accommodation will give you a true pilgrim
Day #4 10 miles / 16 km
Spend the day walking through rows of cypress trees and rolling hills dotted with endless olive trees and grapevines. As we approach San Gimignano, we will marvel at its skyline known as the Manhattan of the Middle Ages because of the stone towers built to shelter families from their marauding neighbors. Participants will be able to choose amongst a wide variety of beautiful restaurants for dinner.
Day #5 16 miles / 25.7 km
Continuing through the Val d'Elsa we will spend the day walking further along the Via Francigena. For centuries this area has been known as the Bohemia of Italy due to the craftspeople specializing in glass, paper, and iron products. We will enjoy spectacular views of ancient towns among the hills and rivers of this region. Mid-afternoon we will arrive at a very special, countryside, Tuscan inn with a pool and extensive gardens and parkland.
Day #6 6 miles / 9.6 km
A shorter day of walking will allow us to take the time to explore the spectacular town of Monteriggioni. This ancient fortified village is one of the most
well-preserved 13th century examples of its kind. Participants will have the chance to walk along the walls to gaze over the Chianti countryside and explore the cobbled lanes of this beautiful, tiny village. In the late afternoon we will walk out of the village to the well-appointed 15th century farmstead that will be our accommodation for the night.
Day #7 13 miles / 20.9 km
Another pleasant day of walking will take us into the heart of the bustling city of Siena. After check-in, participants can explore what has been called the loveliest of Italian medieval cities. The many restaurants in this town make it a pleasure to hunt for a unique dinner experience. Our lodging for the next two nights will be in an Italian villa that is close to the city center but in a quiet location.
We will spend our final, full day in Siena. Enjoy a morning walking tour with a local resident and then explore whatever is of interest to you! Wander through the ancient duomo with its intricate, inlaid marble floors, 16th century Piccolomini library, and famous frescoes. Explore the art and architecture of the Museo Civico. Stay out late with the locals to people watch in the expansive Piazza del Campo. Drink local wine in an enoteca. This evening we will have a farewell dinner to wrap up our time in Tuscany and toast an experience of a lifetime!
